A new article published in Life stated that changes in human skin microbiota composition may trigger immune dysregulation and lead to an inflammatory response. These changes play a significant role in the clinical manifestations and treatment of inflammatory skin diseases – seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne, perioral/periorificial dermatitis and periocular dermatitis.

However, whether skin diseases result from changes in the microbiome or is a cause such a change, remains obscure. Nevertheless, studies on the possible association between changes in skin microbiome and their association with skin diseases have improved the understanding of their pathogenesis, diagnostics, and therapeutics. It was proposed that the identification of the bacterial markers associated with particular inflammatory skin diseases would significantly accelerate the diagnostics and reduce treatment costs.

Thus, microbiota research and determination could facilitate the identification of potential causes of skin diseases, thereby contributing to the design and development of more effective therapies.
